You will need at least a basic plan for content locking. WPBeginner users can get up to 50% off by using this MemberPress coupon.

The first thing you need to do is to install and activate the MemberPress plugin. For more details, see our guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.

Upon activation, you will be required to enter your MemberPress license key. To do this, navigate MemberPress » Activate and paste your key into the text box. Then you need to click on Activate License Key button.

In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to use MemberPress to create a premium subscription and then determine what content can only be accessed after you’ve paid for the subscription.

Let’s start by setting up a new subscription plan for our customers. To create a membership level, you need to go to MemberPress » Membership page and click on the ‘Add New’ button at the top.

Visit MemberPress Membership Page

You have to give a name to the plan and decide on the material cost and billing type.

We will make a one-time lifetime payment, but you can choose one of the regular subscription options.

After that, you have to scroll down to the Membership Options meta box at the bottom of the post editor.

This is where you can customize the permissions and subscription options for this particular plan.

Scroll down for membership options

If you need more than one subscription plan, go ahead and repeat the process. When you’re finished, you can click the Publish button on the left side of the screen to make it available.

The next step is to choose what content is available for each subscription plan on your website. MemberPress makes it easy to control access by using ‘Rules’.

You can set up your own rules by going to MemberPress » Rules page and click the Add New button at the top.

Visit MemberPress Rules Page

The Edit Terms page allows you to select different terms and associate them with the subscription plan.

For example, we will protect all content with a ‘Premium’ tag so that it is only available to Premium plan members.

add a new rule

At the bottom of the rules editor, you’ll see content drip and expiration options. These let you release content gradually and make it unavailable after some time.

If you want all content to be available as soon as you sign up, and remain available without being expired, you should leave them unchecked.

Repeat the process to create as many rules as needed for your membership site.

Once you are satisfied, go ahead and click the ‘Save Rule’ button on the left to save your rule settings.

Now all we have to do is add our locked content.

In our example, we need to add a ‘premium’ tag to posts that we want only premium members to be able to access.

Add Premium Tags to Locked Posts

Next, scroll down to the ‘Subscriber Unauthorized Access’ metabox at the bottom of the post editor.

Here you can choose what logged out users (non-members) will see when they access this content.
