Chennai Super Kings went back to their normal self in the previous edition after a nightmare 2020 season as they came back to win the IPL. They defeated 2-time champion Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.

CSK had a lot of work to do in the mega auctions as they had an aging squad which was always under question ever since the team assembled after the 2018 mega auctions. But the team didn’t care for the criticism as apart from the 2020 season, they won the title in 2018 and 2021 and were runners-up in 2019.

In the mega auctions ahead of IPL 2022, he once again relied on his senior players who had done well for him in the past. He retained MS Dhoni, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja. What they got back in the auction were Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Ambati Rayudu, KM Asif and Robin Uthappa.

Uthappa was bought at his base price. He was transferred from Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2021 season and did well for CSK in the playoffs last season.

On his return to CSK, in a conversation with Ashwin, he revealed that: “MS called me two days later and said, ‘See you, brother’. He said, ‘Welcome to the team’. I said ‘thank you for trusting me’. He said, ‘I have nothing to do with this decision. He said, ‘I didn’t do anything for two reasons. One is for your own good. You should come to this side for your credibility. Second, if I have anything to do with this decision, people will always think because you are my friend, I have put you aside. So, I had nothing to do with this decision.”

Uthappa then said that it made him feel good, he was confident that the management believed in him. “It made me believe that the support staff has faith in me. For me, it was like ‘Okay, now I can go out there and do my stuff myself.

Robin Uthappa has started the new season well as he has given his team a good start. But CSK is yet to leave its mark. After 3 matches, they are still looking for their first win of the season.
